Restorative Yoga classes are relaxing and slow paced; a whole session may consist of as few as five or six postures that are held for long periods of time. Props (including bolsters, blankets, blocks, and belts) are often used to allow the body to be in the most comfortable, supported position possible. Gentle music and guided meditation enhance the calming effects.
Restorative Yoga is known for its relaxing and healing effects. It has its roots in the yoga of B.K.S. Iyengar, who developed it to help students practice without any strain or pain. This was further expanded into a whole system of yoga which is considered ideal for those recovering from injuries or illnesses.
Restorative yoga stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which slows the heart rate, regulates the blood pressure and relaxes the body, and is therefore considered particularly beneficial for those suffering from stress-related conditions (including anxiety, insomnia or headaches). Restorative Yoga is also believed to boost the immune system and accelerate the body's natural healing process.
